After having received a bachelor's degree
in electrical engineering
from Waseda University in Tokyo, he entered
Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.
A bit of jump from a large city to a small
one.
He earned another bachelor's degree there,
this time in chemistry.
From there he moved a relatively short distance
to study for a Ph.D.
in theoretical chemistry at the University
of Chicago.
After finishing his program with several
papers filled with math equations,
he came back from Hyde Park to Tokyo, and
qualified
as a Japanese patent attorney in 1990.
Although he focuses mainly on chemical and
biochemical prosecution and opinion work,
he likes occasional software patents as well.
Now 43 years old (last updated March 2001),
Shoichi is very active, including
participation in wine and professional organizations.
Currently the editor-in-chief of both the
Japanese and English editions of
AIPPI Japan's journal, he is also an active
member and contributor
in the AIPPI case reporter group.
He can also be found as a regular moderator
at INFOPAT lectures when he
is not busy as
President of the Tokyo Wine Society.

Firm Profile
Okuyama & Co. was founded by Mr. Keikichi OKUYAMA (deceased) in 1925 as a patent law firm. Our firm is now conveniently located in the Akasaka area of central Tokyo, which is only one subway stop or 15 minutes walk away from the Japanese Patent Office. Currently the total number of staff members is 39, including 7 registered patent attorneys. The languages we are capable of handling are English, German, and Japanese. Our firm deals with all aspects of application and registration of patents, utility models, trademarks, and designs as well as opinions on industrial property matters. We have also staff members who deal with all aspects of patent and trademark searches. Our expertise covers such technical fields as chemistry, electronics, electrical engineering, biotechnology and mechanical engineering.

- Dr. Shoichi OKUYAMA:
- Specializes in chemistry, biochemistry and electrical engineering. He graduated from Waseda University with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering with emphasis on electronics, and from Iowa State University with another bachelor's degree in chemistry, and also from the University of Chicago with a Ph.D. in physical chemistry. Registered as patent attorney in 1990. He is a member of AIPPI, LES and APAA.
- Mr. Koichi ARIHARA:
- Specializes in chemistry and biochemistry. He graduated from Chiba University with a bachelor's degree in chemistry. Registered as patent attorney in 1988. He has more than 15 years of experience dealing with industrial property matters and has lectured on many occasions. He is a member of Japan Bioindustry Association.
- Mr. Tetsuo MATSUSHIMA
- Specializes in mechanical engineering and metallurgy. He graduated from Shibaura Institute of Technology with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. Registered as patent attorney in 1995. He has extensive experience with preparation and prosecution of patent applications over 15 years.
- Mr. Hisao OKUYAMA:
- Specializes in chemistry and law, including trademarks and designs. He graduated from Akita University (formerly Akita College of Mining) with a bachelor's degree in fuel chemistry, and also from Nippon University with another bachelor's degree in law. Registered as patent attorney in 1953. His appointments in the profession include President of Japan Patent Attorneys Association (1986-1987). He is also a member of AIPPI and APAA.
- Mr. Nobutoshi AKIYAMA:
- Specializes in electrical engineering and electronics and mechanical engineering. He graduated from Nippon University with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. Registered as patent attorney in 1969. He was formerly the manager of the patent department at Tokimec Co., Ltd., a manufacturer of measuring instruments.
